Duck Decoys

Joe Gigl

1880-1962

Fremont

Joe Gigl was a prolific carver and carved hundreds of decoys and miscellaneous carvings including pins, plaques and miniatures. Many of Gigl's full size decoys were very large and utilized cork bodies with wooden heads. He also carved a limited number of all wood decoys. His styles were copied by many other local carvers, including his neighbor and friend Clifford "Moody" Lind. Gigl's decoys are great collector items and are found regularly, but condition is typically a problem due to the cork deterioration. All wood decoys are fairly rare. His plaques are very rare and hard to find.

A majority of the Gigl decoys you will find tend to be the large version in cork. However, he made smaller versions....the large versions were about 25" long(see the black duck above)....the Mallard Hen (left) was about 18" long and the teal (above) was 13" long.
