This company is one of the oldest commercial manufacturers of baits and still operates today. Roberts made 2 baits, the very popular Mudpuppy and the smaller Pupette. The Mudpuppy's came in 7" and 5 1/2" and early versions were a natural splatter color that varied from gray to brownish tones. Early versions were hand carved and had painted eyes and later baits sported glass eyes. Current versions have decals for eyes and come in a variety of colors. The hook setup allowed a hooked fish to pull the hook away from the body so as to not interfere with establishing a strong set on the hook. The body would float freely away from the tussle....allegedly. Based on the teeth marks in alot of the lures found today, the bodies spent a fair amount of time in the muskies mouth anyway. Early lures had a 50/50 split between the front and back of the lure....later versions have more of a 65/35 split with a shorter tail.....a very popular Wisconsin bait!
